NIFTEM

National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management
(An Autonomous Institution under Ministry of Food Processing Industries)

Background
The proposal for establishing NIFTEM was approved in October, 2006. The institute was incorporated as a 'not for profit' company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 on 7-8-2007. In August, 2008 the Ministry revised and up-scaled the scope of the project in order to make the institute an institute of global excellence. The project cost was also revised to about Rs.500 crores (USD $100 million). Since the legal status of NIFTEM as a company was creating hurdles in obtaining statutory recognition as a deemed university from UGC for running its academic courses, the legal status of the Institute was changed to that of a society. After the institute was incorporated as a society, there have been very rapid strides in the growth of the institute.
The institute is offering courses in B. Tech (Food Technology & Management) and M.Tech (Food Technology & Management). The Ministry of HRD has granted 'deemed university' status under 'de novo' category to the institute on 8-5-2012. Consequently, the institute has released advertisements on 10-5-2012 inviting applications from students for admission for the 2012-13 academic session starting from August, 2012.
